look what happened in connecticut. we can't say these are random isolated events anymore. >> it's an epidemic. >> it's an epidemic and growing epidemic. i just wonder, dan, this is the last question to open it up for everybody else, come on, let's get real, buddy, what if mitt romney had an election a year from now? and he had to be the candidate that had to defend the right of americans to buy 10 millimeter glocks and bush masters and these these cartridges that allowed you to continue to spray bull bullets at 6 and 7-year-old children, or at moviegoers. people shopping with their families at malls, how would he do in bucks county? how would he do in the i-4 corridor? how would he do in the suburbs? i don't mean to be crass to my fellow republican friends. a lot is riding on this. if you want to be the party that is willing to put your future on the line to defend the right of americans to possess these military style combat weapons instead of fighting for less taxes, balanced budgets, a rational foreign policy, have

you have 4 to 10-year-olds killed in connecticut. and people are talking about we have to wait on the facts. those are enough facts for many of us. >> one thing we got to do, rev, is keep the pressure on speaker boehner. because he could deep six this and not bring it to a vote. he's the one person that could protect his members by not bringing it to a vote. the american people need to know where everyone in congress stands on this issue. so speaker boehner, bring it to the floor. >> let's take a count. let's call the roll. congresswoman diana degette and governor ed rendell, thanks for your time this evening. >> thank you. >>> coming up, republicans are already plotting to block gun control, but democrats have a plan to fight back. we'll talk with connecticut senator richard blumenthal. but the gop's got a great idea for rebooting the brand. more bush. why? because it worked so well the last time? and richard engel's dramatic escape from captivity in syria in his own words. you're watching "politicsnation" on msnbc. try running four

obviously a very somber day here as you mentioned in connecticut. across this country as the 26 people who lost their lives last friday were being remembered with these tolling of the bells, not just here at connecticut but around the country as well and for a lot of people time simply stopped last friday and hasn't moved in a lot of ways. it is still 9:30, december 14th. for so many family is here and so many friends of those families that are sharing such anguish and such a sense of loss and senselessness at the whole situation last week just up the road here with those 20 young children, those six adults who lost their lives in such a brutal way last week. now, some churches around the country have decided to add a 27th bell toll and a 28th bell toll in memory of the family of the lanza family, nancy lanza, the mother of adam lanza, as well. but a lot of these folks, they know that time will eventually heal all the wounds. at this moment, though, they are finding that it is going to take a sense of community, a sense of bringing everyone together

>> at this point, what isn't behind it, superstorm sandy, heartbreaking tragedy in connecticut last week and now the fiscal cliff standstill that is actually cutting consumer confidence. i think all of those are playing a role. a lot of data firms are cutting back on shopping outlooks for the holiday season. i'm not too worried. we saw this similar, and relatively robust black friday sales, a lull in the following weeks and a surge in the last couple of days before christmas. we'll see the same thing with the last-minute shoppers piling into stores. >> if folks have to shop until they drop the past couple of days, which big-name stores will be open 24/7 before christmas? >> toys r us and macy's, the surprise, mcdonald's is pushing franchisees to stay open on christmas day. they apparently think people will want big macs. >> surprising. >>> the cost of american coins is going up. how does the treasury propose to cut the cost? >> apparently it takes money to make money. the u.s. mint released a two-year report earlier this week, and pennies and nickels cost more than two times their value
